Cody Jarrett is seen in a photo released by San Bernardino police.
The incident began just before 9:20 p.m. when officers began following a stolen vehicle, according to San Bernardino Police Department. Lt. Rich Lawhead.
"Officers noticed a stolen vehicle in the area, actually ran the plate, realized it was stolen, made a U-Turn behind the suspect vehicle, attempted to stop the vehicle," he said.
The car had been reported stolen out of Yucaipa, according to San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan.
The vehicle entered a business parking lot in the area of Highland and Mountain View avenues, at which time the armed driver got out of the car, according to a news release from the Police Department. Lawhead initially said the location was in the area of Baseline Street and Mountain View Avenue.
The man attempted to run from officers, one of whom deployed a Taser multiple times in order to subdue him, the lieutenant stated, adding that the attempts were ineffective,

“When the suspect got up a second time after being Tased, the officer realized that the suspect was armed with a sawed -off shotgun," Lawhead said.
The officer at some point opened fire on the man, but it was not immediately clear what exactly transpired between the time the weapon was seen and the shooting, according to Lawhead.
The suspect was transported to St. Bernardine Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, Burguan tweeted around 11 p.m.
He has been identified as 26-year-old Cody Wayne Jarrett, the news release said.
Investigators did not immediately confirm that they recovered the weapon, but video from the scene showed a shotgun and ammunition on the ground in the area where the incident took place.
